The former Red defender played seven players from his old club, who were at the top of the table with 25 points.
He chose Liverpool’s overall first choice, but skipped the goalkeeper Alisson, despite the No. 1 that helped his team concede 10 goals this season.
This is second only to Burnley’s Nick Pope (11) and linked to Sheffield United’s Dean Henderson, who deserves Carragher’s selection.
In fairness, Alisson missed a number of games earlier in the season due to an injury that may have affected Carragher’s reputation.
The rest of the defense was a much easier decision, with the exception of young central defender Joe Gomez.
“I’ll be honest,” said Carragher in his column for The telegraph. “When building this team, I am very careful when I have too many Liverpool players and this is one of the positions in which I have long and intensively considered alternatives.”
He called Man Utds Harry Maguire and Leicester Duo Jonny Evans and Caglar Soyuncu as possible options, but stayed with Gomez, who has not lost a game alongside partner Virgil van Dijk.
Omitting Fabinho may also surprise some, especially given that Carragher was “Liverpool’s best player until December” before his injury.
The captain of the red, Jordan Henderson – one of the candidates for the PFA player of the year – was accepted as well as the competitors Kevin de Bruyne from Man City and Aston Villa star Jack Grealish.
Carragher had his own thoughts about who should claim the coveted prize.
“It can take many months for the Player of the Year award to be awarded, however [Sadio] Mane deserves it. “
Mane was among Carragher’s first three strikes, with Man City’s Sergio Aguero nodding over Roberto Firmino of Liverpool, making a final decision.
“There was a moment when I thought about this lineup when I thought of leaving out Salah and choosing Raheem Sterling,” Carragher said of Salah’s reception. I slept on it and thought: what do I think? Nothing against Sterling, but he plays left, not right, so I’m not willing to compromise to leave a player out of Salah’s class. “
Carragher’s Premier League team of the season: D. Henderson (Sheff Utd), Alexander-Arnold, Robertson, Gomez, van Dijk, J. Henderson (all Liverpool), De Bruyne (Man City), Grealish (one villa), Mane, Salah (both Liverpool), Aguero ( Man City))
